Rob Burrow: Rugby league legend dies aged 41

Tributes paid to former Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain scrum-half

Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019

Rugby league legend Rob Burrow has died at the age of 41. He died peacefully at his home on Sunday surrounded by his family after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

Burrow, a scrum-half, was diagnosed with MND in December 2019, two years after he retired from playing. He won eight Super League Grand Finals with Leeds and played 15 times for Great Britain.

"Rob's achievements on the field were remarkable but it's the courage, dignity and determination he showed during his battle with MND that makes him a true hero," said Leeds Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield, who has been Burrow's close friend since their playing days together.

"He will be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever play the game, but more importantly as a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. Our thoughts are with Rob's wife Lindsey and their three children Macy, Maya and Jackson at this incredibly sad time."

Burrow's death has sent shockwaves through the rugby league community. He was a popular figure both on and off the field, and his battle with MND has been an inspiration to many.

"Rob was a true warrior on and off the field," said Great Britain coach Shaun Wane. "He faced his illness with the same courage and determination that he showed on the field. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him and he will be deeply missed."

Burrow's funeral will be held at Leeds Cathedral on Tuesday 9th August. The service will be private, but fans will be able to pay their respects at a public memorial service at Headingley Stadium on Wednesday 10th August.
